Preparing Master's Students for Career Success

Students pursue master’s degrees to advance in their chosen careers and earn more money than they would with a bachelor’s degree alone. Because they expect higher salaries, master’s students are willing to take out loans to achieve their educational goals.

Without proper career support, students take a haphazard approach to their job search, which leads to frustration and failure.

When alumni do not see the return on their investment, they doubt the value of their degree and blame their institution.

But it’s not their degrees that are failing them, it’s that they do not know how to build good careers.

Our one-of-a-kind career training platform provides master’s students with the tools and resources they need to confidently build their careers. They are able to quickly identify common mistakes they are making in their job search and learn proven strategies to secure employment in their career field of interest.

Curriculum for Master's Students

Job Search Strategy

This module addresses the common mistakes master’s students are making in the job search. Lessons help master’s students identify why they are stuck in their job search, and the steps they can take to move forward and achieve success.

Find a Career

In our second course, PhDs are shown how to apply their skills as researchers to identify possible career fields of interest. Learners gather evidence and evaluate if a faculty or non-academic career is right for them.

LinkedIn

Students know that LinkedIn is an important tool, but they are often unsure of how to use it. Students learn tips for building a strong profile, engaging with other users, and building their network.

Networking

An estimated 85% of jobs are filled through networks and referrals, but most students say they aren’t networking. This module teaches students how to build and grow a network for career success.

Finding and Applying to Jobs

Students learn how to unlock the hidden job market, write resumes that will be read by hiring managers, and strategies for writing effective cover letters.

Build

Students learn how to communicate their value to employers at each stage of the interview process. Lessons also help students negotiate a job offer.

How our curriculum helps master’s students

The majority of students approach their job search like a numbers game: submitting resumes to postings they find on big job boards. They spend months, sometimes years, on this failed approach.

Our curriculum teaches master’s students how to be active instead of passive job seekers. They learn how to unlock the hidden job market, why they need to network, and how to do so authentically. They gain insights into how hiring works from an employer’s perspective and are better able to communicate their value to employers at each step of the job search.

For international and first-gen students, Beyond Graduate School teaches them about the unspoken rules of job searching in the United States and Canada. They learn the “why” behind the strategy so that they can be more confident in their job search.

Through our curriculum, master’s students gain confidence and are more successful when connecting with employers.
